About me

I’m Soumya, a  filmmaker, director, writer, and producer. I was born in Cuttack, Odisha, into a middle-class family. From a young age, I was deeply observant, finding stories in everyday moments and interactions. This early fascination with narratives and the arts set the stage for my journey into filmmaking.

I began my formal studies at the Film and Television Institute in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, where I developed my craft and understanding of cinema. I then pursued further education in Direction and Screenplay Writing at the Rohtak Film Institute in Haryana followed by Film and Television Institute of India, Pune . Now, based in Mumbai, I’m actively involved in making films, including short fiction and musical projects. Currently, I’m writing my first feature film, driven by a passion to tell stories that truly matter.

I believe in the transformative power of storytelling to unite people and elevate human consciousness. Alongside my filmmaking career, I’m on a journey of spiritual exploration and inner well-being. I strive to live fully in the moment and contribute to making the world a more beautiful and conscious place. Mushkil Kaam

Writer, Director, Producer

Mushkil Kaam, an adaptation of Asghar Wajahat’s story, unfolds in the aftermath of a religious riot, focusing on a group of lower-class individuals from opposing sides who gather at a local tea stall (Chai ki Tapri). As they recount and boast about their roles in the chaos—discussing acts of violence, arson, and other atrocities—they compete to claim responsibility for the most egregious crimes.

Amidst this grim boasting, one man, the protagonist, remains disturbingly silent. As the conversation becomes increasingly brutal, the group debates the ease of committing various acts of violence, culminating in a chilling discussion about the killing of children. This topic provokes the protagonist to finally speak out.

He reveals the profound emotional torment of killing children, explaining that the act is especially harrowing because it forces the perpetrator to confront the image of their own child amidst the violence. This revelation exposes the deep psychological and emotional scars left by such acts, highlighting the true cost of the violence beyond the physical destruction.

Mushkil Kaam explores themes of guilt, trauma, and the dehumanizing effects of violence, offering a powerful commentary on the human cost of conflict and the personal struggles of those involved.

Ext. Open Terrace Cafe.  Day

Writer, Director, Producer

EXT. OPEN TERRACE CAFE. DAY follows a film director who is determined to shoot a controversial gay scene in a public open terrace cafe. Set in a conservative society, the director envisions this scene as a bold step towards breaking social taboos and pushing cinematic boundaries.

As the shoot progresses, the scene's provocative nature ignites outrage among the public. A crowd gathers, furious at the depiction and the audacity of filming such a scene in their midst. The situation quickly escalates into chaos as the crowd storms the set, attacking the crew, vandalizing the equipment, and hurling abuse at the director.

In a dramatic twist, the film reveals that this intense confrontation was merely a product of the director's imagination. The scene was never actually filmed; instead, it was a speculative visualization of the potential backlash and societal reaction to his provocative artistic choices. The director’s vision of the chaos underscores the profound tension between creative expression and societal norms. EXT. OPEN TERRACE CAFE. DAY offers a compelling commentary on the challenges faced by artists in conservative environments and the impact of societal resistance on creative freedom.
